Training equipment: a checklist before you leave

October 2026·HRT Journal
// Beginners

Preparing your equipment before the training day helps you focus on learning. This checklist brings together practical items to prepare for training. It supplements the current programme; it does not replace the requirements of your chosen course.

Start with your course programme

Check its Equipment section and the instructions for your specific date. Courses at different levels can require different equipment. Confirm any uncertainty with HRT before travelling or buying additional items.

Clothing and footwear

  • A sturdy belt that fits your trouser loops and the equipment required for your course.
  • Comfortable, durable trousers and an outer layer suited to the weather.
  • A change of clothing and rain protection when appropriate.
  • Stable, comfortable footwear and a cap.

Eye and hearing protection

Prepare shooting eye protection and hearing protection. Ordinary sunglasses should not be assumed to provide suitable shooting protection. If you wear prescription glasses or need help selecting protection, discuss this with HRT beforehand.

Useful smaller items

  • Writing materials for notes.
  • Insect repellent when appropriate to the season.
  • A flashlight with a clip or pouch if required by the programme.
  • Cleaning supplies, such as a cleaning rod, suitable oil and a mat, when specified for your course. Follow the instructor's directions for their use.

Course-specific equipment

Check the current requirements for a firearm, ammunition, magazines, holster and pouches separately. This general checklist does not establish an ammunition quantity or mean that equipment is included in the price.

Before departure

Review the course requirements and your booking arrangements together. Ask about missing equipment in advance; do not rely on unconfirmed on-site availability.
