When should you progress from L1 to L2?

October 2026·HRT Journal
// Skills

You have completed L1 and are considering the next course. Start with the L2 prerequisites and feedback from your previous training. A calendar date matters for planning, but it cannot tell you whether the next level is the right step.

The programme's prerequisites come first

The current HRT Dynamic Pistol L2 programme requires successful completion of HRT Pistol P1: Basic. Do not treat general range experience as an automatic substitute. If you trained elsewhere, discuss your situation with HRT before applying.

Other courses can have different prerequisites. Check the specific programme rather than relying only on its level number.

Revisit your L1 debrief

Recall the strengths and improvement areas identified by your instructor. Have you had an opportunity to practise in suitable, supervised conditions since the course? Has there been a long break or a change of equipment? These details help a discussion about further learning.

A certificate confirms a particular completed participation. It does not replace a current assessment of readiness for every subsequent activity.

What to tell the instructor

  • Which course you completed, when and with what result.
  • Your learning since then, including any breaks.
  • Difficulties or questions remaining from the previous course.
  • What you want to achieve next.

Progression or consolidation

The discussion may lead to L2, revisiting foundation training or arranging private training around individual needs. Consolidating fundamentals is a normal part of learning. There is no universal number of days or sessions after which everyone should progress.

Check the next course's arrangements

Before confirming participation, compare equipment requirements, duration and booking conditions. L2 requirements need not be the same as L1. Use the current programme and a discussion with HRT rather than an old packing list from the previous course.
